This job was my latest challenge. A favorite client had the walls of one of his rooms painted with chalkboard paint and requested I create lettering in chalk that looked like type with some script added. Wow! First of all, writing with actual chalk? I typically use chalkboard markers which don't leave chalk dust and have a consistent, refined tip. Chalk is a very crude tool and the tip continually wears down, gets blunt and uneven. Chalk also breaks easily. The capital letters here are about 9 inches tall with the word PANTRY over 2 feet in length. I don't know how I pulled it off, but here it is after 2 hours of work!

Wedding Signage

There's definitely a trend lately to use chalkboards for wedding signage. In this case, the board was about 24 x 30 and my client requested I use gold. I knew I couldn't achieve a real gold color with a chalk marker. Luckily the bride and groom didn't want to use the chalkboard for anything else so I was able to use gold acrylic paint, which is permanent. I started with a paint pen. Then, in order to achieve the thicker areas of the letters, I painted them in with a brush. The other sign below is about 24 x 18. I sort of like the contrast of a casual chalkboard with the flourished gold lettering.

100 Layer Cake-let

I just received a request from a new client for calligraphy on her wedding envelopes. She found me through 100 Layer Cake-let wedding website and fell in love with the style shown. There's a new post today featuring the baby shower that Jamie threw for Chelsea, the owners of Sugar Paper . I was delighted to see my calligraphy as well as all of the beautiful photos from the shower. Jamie did an incredible job!

T-Shirt Lettering

K.C. from Beachdude,Inc. sent me this photo today of my lettering printed on the T-shirts he sells. It's always fun to see my lettering used in different ways.

New Addressing Style

With the New York Stationery show coming up soon, Sugar Paper is doing a mailing to their clients to let them know what booth number to come visit. Chelsea asked me to do something "sassy". I had no idea what she meant, had not seen the mailer, but just went for something playful. She loved the lettering and I think it compliments the beautiful card they designed. Now I just need to come up with a name for this style!

Vanity Fair Calligraphy

Every year Vanity Fair has an Academy Award viewing party. This year it was at Spago in Beverly Hills. They create these lovely little books which contain the menu as well as all of the categories of award nominees. My job is to calligraph the names of the guests on the menu covers. I then am hired to be on site for any last minute changes or additions. It was fun to see how beautiful the tables looked and to hear live music while everyone was bustling around the restaurant getting ready for the party.

The Word is ART Gallery Event!

I'm excited to share this upcoming event. I'm going to be the featured artist at the gallery for 3 weeks. Which means my work is in the window and there's an evening event to come see art and have some fun. In addition, 20% of all sales of my art during the three weeks will go to support BunnyLuv Rabbit Resource Center. If you're in the area, I would love it if you came by.

T-Shirt Lettering

I was asked by Beachdude, Inc. to design a t-shirt using my calligraphy. The center shirt shows how the final product came out. Since my calligraphy is primarily used on paper products, it's fun to see it on clothing!  Beachdude, Inc. is a cool company that carries beach inspired clothing. They are also involved in ongoing grassroots efforts to keep our California Coast clean and keep the beach tidy.
